What do you think you’re doing, Dave?

Remember HAL? The artificially intelligent computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey? That glowing red camera eye was ever watchful of the space station’s occupants. Spooky.

Who is watching whom?

While artificial intelligence may not be something to consider (yet), if you have a web-cam installed, it could be turned into something watching you when you’re not expecting it to.

Last January there was an incident where a hacker created a trojan horse to snoop around a user’s computer undetected looking for files AND using the web-cam to spy on users. It could even control a microphone, if connected, to record conversations.

What does this mean to you? Well, to be safe, it’s a good idea to disconnect devices like microphones and web-cams from your computer while not in use.
