Welcome to Family WebWatch Blog

New here? You may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The Internet, when used properly, can be both an educational and entertaining experience. Unfortunately, things like sexual predators, spam, computer viruses, identity theft and many other dangers exist online just waiting for you to make a wrong move—turning your experience into a nightmare.

That’s why I established Family WebWatch, a new resource that provides information on how families can surf the Web more safely and with confidence. To that effect, I’ll be commenting here on the sometimes darker side of the Web with the hope you will learn from other people’s experiences. And if you have something to share, please leave a comment.

This is a companion site to FamilyWebWatch.com. Check it out for indepth information on how you can protect yourself online!

Glad I found your site. The other day some rather unsavory pictures came up when my child was on the computer last night. I can’t remember the specifics on how he got there, but figured it was time to get something to block that sort of thing.

What do you recommend?

P.S. I really like your site. When’s the other site you’re working on coming out? (companion site?)

Hi Larry! Thanks for stopping by. :)

Sorry to hear about your incident. Hope it wasn’t too traumatic. That happened to the child of a friend of mine and, well, let’s just say, her face was red just by talking about it. And it was such an honest mistake that got that page to come up in the first place. Just a mis-typed URL.

So, about your question: I’m going to do a review on parental control software soon and post it to my main site (which should launch next month). For now let me just tell you that personally, I use ContentProtect. It has done a great job since we’ve installed it at home.

But no system is absolutely perfect. From time to time you can expect false positives, like when you know you’re going to a site that’s not bad, but for some reason there’s something on the page that the software is having a fit over and decides to block you. Most of the time that can be overridden.

Hope that helps. And be sure to tell your friends about my blog, will you? In the meantime, surf safely!

To clarify for my visitors, I’d like to add something to the comment I made about mis-typing a URL.

By forgetting a character or mis-typing one in the URL in your Web browser, you don’t automatically go to a “bad” site. It has to do with the low-lifes out there that setup a Web site with a very similar URL (like the one you mis-typed), but it’s off by a character or something subtle. So they wait in hope of catching accidental visitors.

Why do they do this? Well, if I had to guess, I’d say it’s for two reasons:

1. They’re too lazy to market their own brand, so they ride on the success of others

2.It’s all about getting the traffic to their site, so they’ll try every trick in the book. So if it means that little Timmy drops by their site with nasty images on it, whether intentionally or not, then that’s the way it is.

Hello!
This is great what you’re doing protecting your family!
I would like to add one more thing:
Prepaid Legal Services
that it’s absolutelly fantastic how somebody came up with this idea to help people!
