Toolbox Keepers – Part 6 – The Final Installment
It’s finally here! The last in the series of my Toolbox Keepers. Today is about utilities that help remove spyware and malware. So let’s get started!
Microsoft AnitSpware (Beta)
Not to be left out in the cold when it comes to fighting spyware, Microsoft’s AntiSpyware is taking quite a stance against evil-doers, yet does it unobtrusively. It sits in the background of your computer looking for any suspicious activity. Plus, you can launch the application itself and run a thorough scan across your system. No software is perfect, but having this utility watch over you is very helpful in maintaining a clean PC.
Spyware Blaster
Another freebie, Spyware Blaster can prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. It also blocks tracking cookies in IE and Firefox. You’ll have to remind yourself to access the application to download the latest updates, but that’s not a big deal.
CWshredder
A grass-roots initiative to fight against such insidious browser hijackers as CoolWebSearch, CWshredder is another free utility that has one specific job in mind and does it well. It now falls under the umbrella of TrendMicro, but remains free and easy to use. Speaking from personal experience, it’s very easy to have your browser taken over simply by visiting a malicious site. Get this thing!
ewido
I don’t think you can ever have too many anti-malware utilities. Ewido provides supplemental support to the security tools you already use. Among its features are: free e-mail support, daily database updates, scan within archives and lots more.
Ad-aware
Last, but not least, is Ad-aware. Take note that’s ad-UH-ware. This granddaddy of spyware fighters has been fighting spyware when other utilities were still in diapers. It has all the bells and whistles you need out of a free utility to protect your system. It removes keyloggers, detects known and unknown types of malware, scans and removes malicious files, and provides you with easing updating.
