Kids and cell phones about to increase

According to an article, a company by the name of SunCom is developing cell phones for kids ages 8-12. Okay, so isn’t that a bit much? I suppose there are valid reasons for children of any age to have phones, but IMHO, parents have gone overboard. It is estimated by The Yankee Group “that a third of U.S. children aged 10 to 19 already have cell phones, but their ranks will grow to two-thirds by 2005.” #
And then there’s the health concern over using cell phones. Children may be at greater risk than adults. See the article below, but there isn’t much evidence to support a panic just yet.
My guess is that this and possibly other cell phone companies are capitalizing on the child’s interest in instant messaging. Already I’ve heard stories about students spending a great deal of time using IM on computers and cell phones. It has been all the rage. Consider this: the more time they spend doing that, the less time they’re spending doing other things like, oh, I don’t know…going outside, reading a book, anything that doesn’t tie themselves to the computer!
Technology has its place, but no one says we have to be in that place all the time.

I have mixed feelings about this. I’m in a situation where I can’t be home always on time, which usually means my daughter is home before me. It’s just me and her living there. And to save on expenses we just use a cellular plan instead of a phone at home. So I think I’m justified in providing her with a cell of her own.
However, it does concern me to see other kids her age going around using it for text messaging or instant messaging.
