Identity Theft Victim Tells His Story

I’ve never heard so much detail in a case involving identity theft. I’ve known that it is very difficult to repair the damage inflicted upon you, but the hoops this guy (or girl…the article didn’t say) had to jump through are absolutely unbelievable. The article was written back in 2000, so I am hopeful that law enforcement has made vast improvements in tracking down identity theft criminals and helping the victims. Just reading this made me so angry!
It all started when the victim’s wallet was stolen at the grocery checkout stand (from the checker!). Even the security cameras caught the person who took it. Shortly thereafter, the victim started receiving bills for purchases that he did not make. He goes on to say how difficult it was to get companies to cooperate with him to get the information he needed to make a case. The detective was practically useless. “But you’re not the victim,” he would say to this guy. “You don’t have to pay for any of it.” What ignorance. While that may be the case, it still does not mean that people are dramatically, emotionally, and physically changed by becoming a victim to identity theft.

Grrr! A friend of mine had the same thing happen to her. Countless attempts with little to show for it.
