Forgot Your Password? Maybe this will help
If you’re like me, you love having your Web browser remember your username and password. It just makes life so much simpler not having to bother with remembering all that information. But it is a security risk particularly if you’re using a computer that has more than one user.
I have a nice little program that I use to store all sorts of information I don’t want to forget. It’s called eWallet by Ilium Software. It has a desktop component, plus a PDA version so I can take it with me.
Lately, I’ve become more cautious of how I use my Web browser to remember my logon information. So more and more, I’m forcing myself to refer to my list of stored passwords and then sign on to whatever site I’m accessing rather than letting the browser do my dirty work.
For the times I do have it remember, there may be an occasion that I’ve somehow forgotten to update my list with the one the browser actually remembers. On more than a few occasions I have entered what I just know to be true, only to find out that I had made the mistake of not keeping my information current.
So, I came across this other program (free) that may be of help the next time I pound the keyboard demanding it accept my password. It’s called Asterisk Key. It’s supposed to reveal what’s behind those “*****”. I haven’t used it and I don’t have any affiliation with the maker of this software, so use at your own risk.
But bear this in mind: this can also mean someone could be using it to find out your password. You could choose to simply store everything in something like eWallet or AnyPassword (see previous post). Or you could do a combination of storing your logon information AND letting your browser remember usernames and passwords to sites that aren’t as critical, like personalized setting in MyYahoo or something of that nature.
