Sexual predators are very patient and devious people. They know that if they scatter their nets out far enough and for a long enough time, they’ll eventually catch someone.
To me, what makes this article unique is that the parents actually were involved with their daughter’s online and offline activities. They would monitor her cell phone bills, knew her schedule and would sometimes take away her computer as punishment. But despite all their efforts, their daughter still ended up missing. That must be so disheartening for them.
Nevertheless, it’s important for parents to remain vigilant in being a part of their child’s life. They must get to know the child’s cyber-friends like they would their school friends.
We tend not to think of the Internet as being a public place because it all takes place in the comfort of our home. But underneath it all, it’s a very public place, just something that happens in a different environment.
I propose that many people believe computers are a way of getting things done faster, something that brings information and entertainment more than we do as a communications device. But it’s this latter role that often goes overlooked and can have distressing results. Relationships are built via the computer. Teens in particular are at an age when they’re reaching out for someone who will listen to them, who will care about their ideas and challenges.
Enter the sexual predator. They know these things. Getting into the minds of their victim is what they do best. When a sex offender finds a target, they patiently work on them, slowly breaking down barriers, earning their trust, and work on increasing the distance between the child and their parents.
Parents need to be just as tireless when it comes to protecting their child.
